Buying a used car in Poland: where to search on Otomoto and OLX, how to check it and avoid scams

A used car in Poland can be found within minutes, but buying safely takes much longer. Attractive photos, low mileage and a good price do not prove that the vehicle is mechanically sound, accident-free or legally owned by the seller.

The main marketplaces are Otomoto and OLX. Both carry listings from private owners, car dealers and commissions. A platform helps you find a vehicle, but it does not replace VIN checks, document verification, an independent inspection and confirmation of the seller’s identity.

Otomoto or OLX: where to look

How to search effectively

• Set a realistic total budget and keep a reserve for initial service, insurance, tax, registration and tyres.
• Compare cars of the same year, engine and trim. A price far below the market requires an explanation.
• Filter by seller type: private person or business.
• Save the listing and screenshots because it may disappear after the sale.
• Understand common Polish descriptions: bezwypadkowy means accident-free, uszkodzony means damaged, do poprawek means requiring work, and sprowadzony means imported.

Information to request before travelling

• the full 17-character VIN;
• registration number and date of first registration;
• a clear copy of the registration certificate;
• current OC insurance and technical inspection details;
• service records, repair invoices and number of keys;
• written consent for an independent workshop inspection.

Check the official vehicle history

CEPiK data may be reported with delays, so the service is an important screening tool, not a substitute for a mechanic.

1. Open the Polish government Historia Pojazdu service.

2. Enter the registration number, VIN and date of first registration.

3. Compare technical data with the advert and documents.

4. Review recorded mileage, inspection dates, insurance information, owner history and available foreign data.

5. Download the PDF report. It is informational and is not an official court document.

Verify OC insurance separately

The UFG database lets anyone check whether compulsory OC insurance was valid on a selected date using the registration number or VIN.

Do not rely only on a paper policy. The seller’s OC transfers to the buyer, but the insurer may recalculate the premium, and the transferred policy does not automatically renew for the following year.

Verify the seller and ownership

• Match the seller’s details with the registration certificate, agreement and identity document.
• If the seller is not shown as owner, demand an uninterrupted chain of contracts or invoices.
• Search the phone number and reviews.
• For a business, verify NIP, REGON, CEIDG or KRS and its address.
• Do not accept a different named seller or an artificially reduced contract price.
• Confirm that the car is not leased, pledged or subject to third-party rights.

Inspecting the car

• Meet in daylight and ask for a cold engine.
• Match every VIN marking with the documents.
• Inspect paint shades, panel gaps, welds, corrosion, windows and seat-belt dates.
• Compare interior wear with the claimed mileage.
• Test brakes, steering, gearbox, clutch, suspension, air conditioning and warning lights.
• Arrange an independent workshop inspection, diagnostics and underbody check.

Common scam warning signs

Paying safely

• Do not pay a deposit before seeing the car and checking the documents.
• For a large amount, make a bank transfer when the agreement is signed and include the VIN in the reference.
• The bank account holder should match the seller.
• Do not release the full price before receiving the signed agreement, keys and documents.
• For cash, include written confirmation of full payment.

What the sales agreement should contain

Do not understate the purchase price. It creates tax risk and may make it harder to recover the amount actually paid if the contract is disputed.

• full buyer and seller details;
• make, model, registration number and VIN;
• actual mileage on the sale date;
• exact price and payment method;
• date and preferably exact handover time;
• documents, keys and equipment handed over;
• known defects, damage and seller declarations;
• signatures of every owner and buyer.

Private seller versus dealer

When a consumer buys from a business, the seller is liable for a lack of conformity with the contract for two years after delivery, including for a used car.

In a private sale, Civil Code warranty rules apply, but the parties may limit or exclude liability. An exclusion does not protect a seller who fraudulently concealed a defect.

• Independent inspection and test drive completed.
• VIN matches the documents and body.
• Defects and promises are written into the agreement.
• No transfer to an unknown third party.

Conclusion

Otomoto and OLX are useful search tools, but safe purchasing starts with documents and an independent inspection. Do not let a ‘one-time bargain’ rush you into paying a deposit or skipping a workshop.

Spending a few hundred zlotys on checks before buying can prevent losses of many thousands later.
